Collection Development Guide: Family & Consumer Sciences: Selection Criteria

This guide provides collection development information to Family & Consumer Sciences faculty and faculty representatives.

General Selection Criteria

General Selection Criteria
Alkek Library will purchase material at the Instructional level (2) for the library’s collection in support of the following degreed programs: 

Human Development and Family Sciences
Consumer Affairs
Fashion Merchandising
Interior Design
Nutrition and Foods

The department allocation will also purchase material at both the Instructional level (2) and Research level (3) for the following degreed programs:

Master's of Family and Child Studies
Dietetic Internship

The department allocation will also purchase material at research level (3) for the library in support of the School of Family & Consumer Sciences faculty research.


Specific Selection Criteria

Collection efforts will concentrate on, but are not limited to the following areas:

  • Head Start Programs
  • Hospital Child Life Programs
  • Pregnancy Education and Parenting (PEP) Programs
  • Hays-Caldwell Women's Center
  • Children's Shelters
  • Business Studies
  • Consumer Credit Counseling Service
  • Consumer Protection Division of Attorney General's Office
  • Financial Institutions (Banks, Credit Unions)
  • Insurance Companies
  • Small Business Development Centers
  • Texas Agricultural Extension Service
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (Formerly Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission) 
  • Women's Centers
  • Fashion Marketing/Merchandising
  • Interior Design
  • Nutritional Sciences
