Researching Organizations & Industry

990 Finder | Search 990 forms of private foundations, public charities, and other nonprofits.

Nonprofit Explorer | View summaries of tax returns from tax-exempt organizations and see financial details such as their executive compensation and revenue and expenses.

ProPublica NonProfit Explorer | A free database of nonprofit financial documents. The Chrome extension works on LinkedIn, reveals emails, websites.

U.S. Bureau of Labor Industries at a Glance | From the U.S. Bureau of Labor, includes reports on over 100 industries, organized by NAICS code or industry name, focusing on employment, labor, and trends.

Economic Census | Every five years, the U.S. Census Bureau collects extensive statistics about businesses that are essential to understanding the American economy.

Observatory of Economic Complexity | An online resource for international trade data and economic complexity indicators available through interactive visualizations of countries and products.

Current Industrial Reports | The Current Industrial Report (CIR) program provides monthly, quarterly, and annual measures of industrial activity, including data on production and shipments of selected products

ValuationResources.com | A free resource that covers more than 400 industries. For each industry, it includes overviews, key issues, trends and the industry's outlook as well as financial bench marking, compensation surveys and valuation resources.

International Trade Administration Office of Industry Analysis | Provides information including international statistics, industry analysis, competitiveness, trade data as well as recent reports and news about a number of different industries.

Industry Outlooks | Deloitte offers industry prediction reports for state government, banking and securities, commercial real estate, energy and resources, insurance, payments, process and industrial products, renewable energy, retail and talent strategies industries

To learn more about a nonprofit through its website, navigate the menu to look for information that could be described in these terms:

  • Mission statement, values, and organizational history.
  • Programs, programming, campaigns, "our work," or "what we do" sections for organization activities.
  • Resources or a resource library that could include data, infographics, maps, booklets, and information or education-based materials to support community organizing.
  • Publications including annual reports, research reports, white papers, press releases, and social media feeds.
  • Partnerships, campaigns, or coalition work with other organizations.
  • Staff & Board of Directors lists
  • Donations from individual donors, foundations, corporations, and government grants.
  • For content that has been removed, copy the URL and check to see if there is an archived page in the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine.
