Welcome to Alkek Library's Government Information unit. This guide was created to assist researchers who might use publications or resources published by the federal or state government.

This library is a congressionally designated depository for U.S. Government documents. The documents collection is available to Texas State University students, faculty, staff, as well as the local community, as guaranteed by public law (Title 44 United States Code).

The Alkek Library is a selective depository in the Federal Depository Library Program. Alkek's Government Information collection possesses approximately 1.4 million Federal and Texas documents, including a large collection of topographic maps.

Accessing Government Documents at Texas State

Print government documents are located at one of the following locations:

  • Alkek Library 4th floor SW corner, compact shelving (main location) 
  • Alkek Library 3rd floor (gov info, gov info reference)
  • Archives and Research Center

The Majority of government documents are in the 4th floor compact shelving. You may retrieve the documents yourself or you may contact the Government Information, Checkout Desk, or Ask Alkek desks for assistance retrieving items. A smaller portion of the documents has been moved to the 3rd floor government information shelves or to the Archives and Research Center.

Topographic maps have been moved to the 3rd floor of the Alkek Library.

Federal Depository Library Materials Access Policy

University Libraries at Texas State University offers access to materials obtained through the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP).  Free public access to United States government documents in a federal depository library is guaranteed by law (44 USC §1911).

Depository materials circulate in accordance with University Libraries’ Borrowing Policy.  Community members may check out circulating depository material with a TexShare card or Community Borrowers card. Any patron may view depository library material within the Alkek library.  Patrons may use photocopiers to copy material or scan the materials using KIC machines located throughout the library.

Alkek Library has two public workstations on the 3rd floor of the library.  Visitors may use the computers to view, download, and print government information.  According to Texas State University Libraries’ policy, public patrons are charged a per-page fee for printing.  

Research assistance for public users of FDLP information is equal to such services offered to other users and for other information.
