HIST 2312: World Civilization from the 17th C.: Chapter 20

Dr. Bishop Fall 2022

chapter 20

Question-  "What was the impact of these changes on the society and environment of the industrializing countries?"

Secondary source-  Histories of technology, the environment, and modern Britain / edited by Jon Agar and Jaco (London : UCL Press, 2018) [because "Suggested Readings" is not included in the chapter scan, I chose this myself using the search terms "Great Britain industrial environment history," obtained 16 results, sorted by date, then selected the most relevant]. The introduction's "Environment as something changed, usually damaged, by outputs of technological process," looks as if it would yield a good testable hypothesis: one option might be the sentence with its hyperlink, "Mosley showed how ‘Manchester, once fêted as the “symbol of a new age”, had come to epitomise [sic] the grimy, polluted industrial city."

Primary source-  Victorian Popular Culture  you can find a tutorial here. A search for "Manchester" and "city" yields 547 results, which can be sorted by date. Results on p. 1 including Zoological Gardens Belle Vue, Hyde Road, Manchester (1848) can be used to test the first half of Mosley's statement ("fêted as the 'symbol of a new age'"), and results on p. 2 include an Official Guide to the Gardens, Belle Vue, Manchester (1899). Note: same location, fifty years' difference.
