Literature reviews typically involve exhaustive searches on a given topic in an effort to locate a range of sources to analyze and summarize different viewpoints. Literature review databases have citation analysis tools that let you see how many times a paper as been cited, and other papers that cite that particular work.

Commonly accepted (and recommended) databases for literature reviews include:

  • Web of Science--Comprehensive citation index covering the leading scholarly literature around the world. Contains Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index Expanded,  and more.  This variety might be helpful if your thesis work includes different disciplines.
  • SCOPUS--Science, Technology, Medicine, Social Science, Arts & Humanities. Scopus, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, features smart tools to track, analyze and visualize scholarly research.

Google Scholar also has citation analysis. Just look at the bottom left corner of the citation, and then click to see the articles citing the original citation.

Citation management software helps streamline your research so that you collect citations while you do your research, and then use the included tools to generate bibiliographies and in-line citations.

University students, faculty, and staff have access to the following two citation managers:

The library has regularly scheduled workshops to help you learn to use these resources.  You can also set up an individual consultation to learn about Endnote & Refworks.
