Environmental Scan - CLAS: Students

Introduction

The survey shows that 14 CLAS graduate students replied. Most student research is online and they like to access content online based on my experience with this department during instruction. Not much usable feedback was gathered by way of the survey and I think this is a group that needs more direct contact, like following up a library session with the survey at the end of the semester, sent by the librarian. Overall, students who responded were satisfied with library resources and services, with the exception of the comment about the GRADS service.

Please share any comments about visiting the Alkek Library:
I have always had a positive experience when I have used the library.
I have never visited because I live in Round Rock.
I typically use the online database the most.
Meet a long line to use the computer. The 4th floor computer room is quite stuffy.

Please share any comments about the Library’s collection(s):
It is more difficult to find resources about community education than I would like through our library.  Considering it is part of a PhD program here, seems we should have access to more journals which focus on this topic.
Online journals are great!
The online research database is extremely helpful.

How can the Ask a Librarian service be improved?
I asked a librarian on Chat about an article I could not locate that I needed for one of my classes. She found it for me. She also told me that I could request it and have it delivered to me. I initially said no, but then I changed my mind and I completed the request form. I never got the article. I remembered who helped me on Chat and I brought it to her attention via an e-mail and she never responded. Below is the e-mail that I sent.  You may not remember me but a few weeks ago you helped me via the chat. I was looking for this article and [she] said there was a new service for grad students-- we could go to Interlibrary Loan, request the article, and the library would deliver it to you. I told [you] I would just go by and get the article and thanked you for the information. I ended up changing my mind and requested the article. I wanted to let you know that no-one sent me the article nor was I ever contacted. I don't need it any longer-- one of my classmates had it. Thought you should know because there seems to be a "hiccup" in the system somewhere. Thanks for your help.

Please share any comments about your experience accessing materials on the Library’s website using a mobile device:
I enjoy finding articles with my iPad because I can download them as PDFs and keep them on there. I have those articles with me at all times and do not have to print anything.

Please share any additional comments about the Library and/or your research needs:  No CLAS Comments

In Spring 2015, librarians began sending students a research consultation survey to provide us with feedback regarding their experience scheduling the appointment and their time spent with the librarian. After the meeting, I would send them an email summarizing our discussion along with search permalinks for searches to help them with their research and ended with a request to fill out the survey. I included a statement that the survey went directly to my supervisor, not to me. I received 11 responses (6 from Graduate students; 3 from Post Graduate/Doctoral 1 from Faculty; 1 did not choose provide their role) . The questions highlighted here are:

Were your information needs met?   Yes  Somewhat  No

Would you recommend the Research Consultation Service to others?  Yes  Maybe  No

Overall, how satisfied where you?   Very Satisfied  Somewhat  Not Satisfied

Suggestions for Improvement or General Comments:  (4 students provided comments)

Arlene was very patient in listening to my research process concerns and offered a wealth of valuable feedback to support my work.
Arlene provided valuable insights to support my research work. This was a follow up session to clarify RefWorks questions.
Arlene does a great job, whether it is one-on-one with students or in a workshop-type setting.
This lady was "ABSOLUTELY" fabulous. I wish I had known about her 4 years ago!
I feel as though Ms. Salazar went above and beyond my expectations for helping me utilize library reference material available to students. Kudos for a job well done, I will share my thoughts about this service with my instructor and fellow students as well. Thanks so much! I was overwhelmed initially with the research project but I have managed to piece together my writing project and am well on my way towards initial submission of prospectus. I thought that the video in TRACS was great but she made an awesome effort towards helping me pull material together for my paper and I look forward to utilizing library services again soon!
