Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

This guide gives a basic overview of GIS and the resources available at the Texas State University Libraries.

Jose Anza Garcia - Geospatial Specialist

I hold BS and MS degrees in geographical sciences and GIS (respectively) from the University of Maryland. I previously served as a GIS Specialist at that same institution's library division. While there, I provided technical consultations to patrons on spatial analysis, spatial statistics, and GIS project management; I developed educational materials on GIS and presented workshops to the Maryland community; I built and managed three GIS web applications and served as lead on various GIScience-related projects; and finally, I attended and presented at conferences representing University of Maryland University Libraries. I also have previous experience as a GIS research assistant on remote sensing- and public health-related projects and as a GIS intern with UMD Facilities Management. I am excited to use the experience and skills I built up to serve the Texas State Bobcat community in support of all its GIS needs.

Research Interests

My research and technical interests include 3D GIS and geovisualization of both outdoor and indoor small-scale environments, web application development and management, and spatial statistics. However, I am broadly interested in the application of GIS techniques and GIScience principles to any and all fields, so please feel free to reach out if you wish to collaborate or have questions on anything geospatial-related.

Skills

ArcGIS Software Suite (Pro, Online, Enterprise, Experience Builder, Field Maps, Indoors, Mobile), QGIS, GIS web application development (ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript, Leaflet, OpenLayers), 3D geovisualization, indoors GIS, Python, relational and spatial databases (PostgreSQL/PostGIS, MySQL, geodatabases)

Wesley Kimeli - GIS Graduate Student

I am a first-year graduate student in M.S Geography program with a background in geospatial analysis and environmental conservation. I hold a B.S in Geography and have experience working with an environmental conservation agency in Kenya, where I mapped environmentally sensitive ecosystems and carried out habitat suitability analysis to inform decision-making and policy. Currently, I work as a Graduate Assistant for GIS and Data Services at the Alkek Library, where I support patrons with GIS-related projects, provide technical assistance, and research new trends in GIS workflows, technologies and applications.

Research Interests

My research interests include, 3D GIS, predictive analysis, virtual reality GIS, land cover change, with a focus on advancing GIS application in environmental conservation.

Skills

Arc GIS Software Suite (Pro, Online, Instant Apps, Dashboard, StoryMaps, Urban), LP360, ERDAS IMAGINE

Jyotsana Kandel - GIS Student

I'm a sophomore majoring in Geography, Resource and Environmental Studies, and minoring in GIS.I work with GIS Services at Alkek Library as a GIS Student employee, where I provide technical consultations to patrons on a variety of GIS-related topics, including spatial analysis, research support, story mapping, and class projects. I'm excited to apply what I've learned in the classroom to real-world and to contribute to the Texas State community through my work in GIS.

Research Interests

My research and technical interests include environmental analysis, energy systems, natural hazards, crime mapping, and hotspot analysis. I'm particularly passionate about using GIS for the visualization and analysis of real-world issues.
