Using GIS at Your Library: Professional Organizations

This guide was created to supplement the 'Using GIS at Your Library' presentation at the Texas Library Association 2014 Annual Conference.

Professional Organizations

GIS and Library professional organizations are great resources to help library staff in gaining the skills and knowledge to provide GIS services to patrons.  Here are some selected organizations in geography and librarianship.

Government Documents Round Table (GODORT)

  • "The purposes of the Government Documents Round Table are:

    1.  to provide a forum for the discussion of problems and concerns and for the exchange of ideas by librarians working with government documents; 
    2. to provide a nexus for initiating and supporting programs to increase the availability, use and bibliographic control of documents; 
    3. to increase communication between documents librarians and the larger community of information professionals; 
    4.  to contribute to the education and training of documents librarians."

Map & Geospatial Information Round Table (MAGIRT)

  • "The Map and Geospatial Information Round Table (MAGIRT) leads and inspires information professionals at all levels of expertise in their work with map and geospatial information resources, collections and technologies in all formats, through community, education and advocacy."

Association of American Geographers (AAG)

National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE)

  • "The National Council for Geographic Education works to enhance the status and quality of geography teaching and learning."

American Geographical Society (AGS)

  • "The American Geographical Society is an organization of professional geographers and other devotees of geography who share a fascination with the subject and a recognition of its importance."

The Imaging and Geospatial Information Society

  • "Founded in 1934, the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) is a scientific association serving more than 7,000 professionals worldwide." 

University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS) 

  • "The University Consortium for Geographic Information Science seeks to:
    Advance research in the field of Geographic Information Science;
    Expand and strengthen Geographic Information Science education;
    Advocate policies for the promotion of the ethical use of and access to geographic information and technologies; and,
    Build scholarly communities and networks to foster multi-disciplinary GIS research and education" 

Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA)

  • "URISA - The Association for GIS Professionals - is a  leading provider of learning and knowledge for the GIS community. URISA connects great ideas and great people to inspire leadership and achievement."

Geospatial Information and Technology Association (GITA)

  • "The Geospatial Information and Technology Association (GITA) is the professional association and leading advocate for anyone using geospatial technology to help operate, maintain, and protect the infrastructure, which includes organizations such as utilities, telecommunication companies, and the public sector."
