Research Experience for Undergraduates in Computer Science: Publication Life Cycle

Life Cycle

Stage What Implications
Idea! Exploring a research idea Search prior literature for uniqueness, collaborators, and improvements
Pre-Prints Share ideas early Establish your idea as the first. Publish in ArXiv or on ResearchGate.
Posters Share early findings and get feedback Get early feedback on your idea, identify collaborators for future work
Conference Presentation Share findings quickly Editorial process is less rigorous than a journal, so lower barrier to "publication" = more current
Reports/Journal Articles Formal presentation of research findings Editorial process ensures uniqueness, quality, and high standards = less current (as long as 6 months to publication), but more authoritative. May be required for tenure/promotion.
Book Publish a comprehensive look at something Editorial process is quite lengthy. Least current and most authoritative.
