PS 4399: Political Communication in American Politics

This guide is designed to help in providing some good starting points for library research projects in the 4399 capstone class.

Search Strategies

Search by keywords and phrases. Maximize your keyword searches with Boolean searching:
 
  AND  
polarization AND "social media" all words must appear in the result list     

OR  
   polarization or polarity or partisanship    either word may appear in the results     
NOT      "social media" NOT facebook             must mention the phrase "social media",      
but excludes items with the term facebook

Phrase Searching: use "quotation marks" to search for phrases.

Truncation: the asterisk (*) symbol is used most often in library databases.

legislat* will search for all forms of the root:

legislate
legislature
legislative

Review Subject terms. Those are listed in the databases and records of citations in search results. These can be useful for learning the preferred vocabulary of a discipline.

Citation Management

Consider using a citation management software to help keep track of your citations for your bibliography and offers a Web and Desktop version. EndNote is a citation management tool that enables you to:

► Organize your research Include citations while you write your paper
► Build a bibliography in a variety of formats
►Import references from library databases and Google Scholar.

Print copies of Various Style Guides

Zotero is a free, open-access tool developed by an independent, nonprofit organization that has no financial interest in your private information. The free version provides 300 MB of storage space and additional storage is available for a fee. Zotero lets you:      

  ► Attach images, notes, and PDFs to your citations   
  ► Organize and tag your citations into collections and folders            
  ► Create bibliographies automatically as well as in-text citations    
  ► Share references and research information with a group
