US 1100 Library Course Guide: Welcome

Course guide specific to University Seminar 1100.

Welcome to Texas State and the University Libraries

Welcome to Texas State! We are so glad you are here. If you came here to learn more about Alkek Library and our services, you are in the right place. Whether you're a first-year student or just transferred to Texas State from another university, we understand that college can be a challenging new experience.

Nobody is supposed to have all the answers right away. That's where the library can help. We are here for you and eager to assist.

High School vs. College Libraries

You may be familiar with your high school or public library. But did you know that university libraries are different? Not only are they usually physically larger, but:

  • They support not only coursework (like high school libraries) but also the research interests of faculty, which can be varied and unrelated to course offerings.
  • They stay open later! See our hours page for Alkek Library's current hours.
  • Computer labs, checkout technology, and ITAC (IT Assistance Center) are available.
  • They subscribe to scholarly journals, most of which can be found digitally through electronic databases.
  • Have multiple places where you can find help, including the ITAC Help Desk on the First Floor of Alkek Library and the Ask Alkek Desk on the main floor of the library.

Frequently Used Links

Make sure to bookmark the Current Students webpage. Throughout your time at Texas State, you will use these logins regularly. Registration, Canvas, paying tuition, checking the shuttle schedule, pretty much every day, for everything.

The Division of Information Technology offers many services to the Texas State community. We invite you to browse the products, services, and support list. You may find the search and filter options to help find what you need.

Reservable Group Study Rooms

Several collaboration rooms are available for students to use. Reserve them online.

The 2nd floor of Alkek Library has 4 rooms available for collaborative use. Inside are large tables with built in plugs so you may use your own device to plug in directly and display your work on the large monitor. Whiteboards are also available inside each room. If you are in need of additional markers and erasers, let us know at the Ask Alkek Desk or call 512.245.2686.
