Geographic Information Services (GIS)

This guide gives a basic overview of GIS and the resources available at the Texas State University Libraries.

Alkek GeoSpace Instruction Lab

The GeoSpace Instruction Lab in Alkek Library houses 22 computer workstations with geospatial and other software packages. In addition to the GeoSpace Lab, computers in other open labs in the University Libraries and across campus offer different specialized software.

Location and Hours

Location: First floor of the Alkek Library, Room 105.

Lab Hours: The GeoSpace Instruction Lab is open for individual assignments and research:

  • Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 11:00pm
  • Saturday, 10:00am - 5:00pm

In-Person Assistance: The GeoSpace Instruction Lab offers onsite assistance within the following hours for Fall 2024 (except during public holidays or when the Libraries are closed):

  • Monday, 9:00am - 3:00pm
  • Tuesday, 8:00am - 3:00pm
  • Thursday, 8:00pm - 3:00pm

GeoLab Guidelines

  1. You must be a student, faculty, or staff of Texas State University with a valid NetID. A login is required to access all applications on the computers.
  1.  You must have a personal storage device eg. external hard drive, portable hard drive, flash drive etc. to save/store all projects. ALL PATRON’S DATA LEFT ON WORKSTATIONS WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DELETED AFTER THEY SIGN OUT.
  1. No food or drink; covered or uncovered is allowed in the lab. NO EXCEPTIONS. Violators could have their food or drink ceased and in some cases, may be asked to leave the lab.
  1. The GeoLab is open to all forms of research and academic work, but when there is a shortage of space, priority will be given to patrons needing a geospatial application for their project.
