Geographic Information Services (GIS)

This guide gives a basic overview of GIS and the resources available at the Texas State University Libraries.

Workstation Specifications

The GeoSpace Instruction Lab houses 22 individual workstations, each with the following specifications:

  • 64-bit Windows 10
  • Intel Core i7-9700, 8 Core processor, 12MB Cache, 3.0GHz, 4.7 GHz Turbo w/UHD Graphics 630

  • ArcGIS Desktop (Version 10.7; ArcMap)
    • Windows-based integrated suite of GIS applications designed by ESRI for manipulating and displaying geographic data.

    • Windows-based professional desktop GIS software designed by ESRI with capabilities for viewing, exploring, analyzing, editing, and sharing (online) maps and data. An ArcGIS Pro project can contain many maps and layouts as well as tables, charts, and other items. 3D capabilities are native to ArcGIS Pro; any 2D map can be converted to a 3D scene.

  • Google Earth Pro
    • 3D interactive globe that provides a platform for viewing and digitizing earth features. A product of Google originally designed as the business-oriented version of Google Earth.
  • Pix4Dmapper
    • Photogrammetry software for professional drone mapping.
  • PyCharm
    • Windows-based Python integrated development environment (IDE) equipped with troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Pyscripter (Version 2.7)
    • Windows-based Python integrated development environment (IDE) equipped with troubleshooting capabilities.
  • QGIS (Version 3.x)
    • Free and open-source GIS application with several functionalities for geographic information system analysis.
