First-Generation College Students

First Gen Proud celebrates, recognizes, supports, mentors, and awards Texas State University first-generation students, their journeys, their graduations, and their accomplishments.  First Gen Proud provides and hosts events, a student organization, a committee, and resources specifically for first-generation college students at Texas State University.  In 2020-2021, Texas State University was named a cohort of First-Gen Forward Institutions by the Center for First-Generation Student Success.  “The First-Gen Forward designation recognizes institutions of higher education that have demonstrated a commitment to improving experiences and advancing outcomes of first-generation college students. Are you a Texas State University student, who is interested in connecting with other first-generation college students, staff, and faculty?  If yes, then you can become a member of the FLIP at Texas State Student Organization.  This organization’s commitment is provide and support community, inclusion, and support for all First-Gen, Low Income (FLI) students at Texas State University.  Its mission: “FLIP at Texas State aims to provide a holistic support for first generation and/or low income (FLI) students at Texas State. FLIP at Texas State's purpose is to advocate for FGLI students as they navigate their way through post-secondary education. Are you a faculty or staff member, who is interested in welcoming, supporting, and celebrating first-generation students at Texas State University?  If yes, you can participate and join the First Gen Proud Committee.  Its mission, vision, and goals: “Texas State First Gen Proud Committee is dedicated to supporting our first-gen population by welcoming and celebrating their successes. We focus on cultivating students' strengths and accomplishments while providing individual mentorship and other forms of institutional resources—from college to commencement to career. These are the guiding priorities of the Committee:

• We will create and host events that welcome, celebrate and support our first-gen students
• We will generate and implement training and professional development for faculty, staff and students to best support the individual needs of Texas State's first-gen population
• We will champion affiliated student organizations, including FLIP
• We will provide marketing to spread awareness about the unique obstacles and successes of first-gen students

First Gen Proud Committee meetings are scheduled twice a month, and focused on first-generation college students’ needs and success.
