Zero-generation students struggle in American universities due to these two factors: (1) they immigrated to the United States from environments that are rife due to violence, poverty, and trauma, and (2) they struggle with language, culture, and philosophy.  Bindamnan mentioned that he was mislabeled as first-generation student.  He pointed out that there is a difference between first-generation students and zero-generation students.  

Since the Supreme Court’s ruling that prohibits affirmative action in college admissions, American colleges and universities are rethinking how to identify, approach, support, and define first-generation students.
