Collection Development Best Practices: Serials

Goal

Current and archival collections that facilitate research and teaching.

Best Practices

Participate in the annual serials drop and adds review.  Get faculty input, meet deadline for review.  Make decisions using evidence-based data (statistics and cost per use), along with documented faculty research needs.

Research new subject resources for assigned subject discipline.

Research Alkek holdings and price data of new journal/serial requests, before submitting a request.  If holdings are found, forward info to requestor for added information, including whether perpetual rights are needed, and if we have holdings but not back files, or we have some holdings but there is an embargo.  Make sure holdings information is included if a request is still necessary, insuring the request is accurate and complete.

In addition to insuring Basic duties are fulfilled should:

Make serial recommendations based on documented (evidence based data, including fund considerations, usage statistics, need or lack of need, etc.

In addition to insuring Basic and Better duties are fulfilled should:

Research new journal/serial requests for price, access, and perpetual rights and include data when submitting request.

Suggested Measures of Success

Usage and survey responses (LibQual) will indicate collections in discipline needs are being met or increasing, and relevant.

Fund allocation serial expenditures are within necessary parameters, and there are sufficient funds each year for new material acquisitions.
