Collection Development Best Practices: Assessments

Goal

Help university accredited programs attain national reputation by producing collection assessments for annual program reviews, new program assessments and accreditations.

Best Practices

Work with CD Librarian to complete assessments in the required timeline for 5 year program reviews, accreditations and/or new program proposals.

Read all University Curriculum Committee meeting course additions and changes and read all program proposals relevant to your subject areas.

Participate in outside program assessments (usually for accreditations, but can be new program reviews or THECB University PhD program reviews as requested (requests come from dept.)

Read all University Curriculum Committee meeting course additions and changes and read all program proposals relevant to your subject areas.

In addition to insuring Basic duties are fulfilled should:

Take responsibility for particular parts (as assigned by CD librarian) of assessments to help the process get completed in timely manner.

Monitor the recommended reading lists that are always attached to the new course or new program proposal/s.  Collect library material proactively to support new courses or programs.

For new program proposals at the graduate level, subject librarian must create or incorporate a collection policy specific to the new program once it is approved, as per PPS 2.05, attachment A1 and A2.

In addition to insuring Basic and Better duties are fulfilled should:

Create assessments for assigned subject areas as requested.

Offers to research other information beyond library data, for new program proposals.

Provide all reporting data (titles, formats and expenditures usually) requested by assigned dept. for proof of supplemental library support  to the THECB.  Ex. Of those done annually:

  • Developmental Education
  • Criminal Justice
  • MSEC

Suggested Measures of Success

Acknowledgement from relevant dept. indicating reliable data for university programs, new programs or accreditations has been forwarded in timely fashion.

5 year program review data is sent to AVP for Institutional Effectiveness according to their needs and stated deadlines.
Note: These go directly to Dr. Wuest, not to department. Faculty must contact Dr. Wuest for the data.

Eventually, department data requests go directly to subject librarian to fulfill, though data should be reviewed by Acq./CD before sending.
