Events: Name Changes

Texas State University is the seventh name of the institution that began as Southwest Texas State Normal School.   Name changes reflected the schools evolution from a school that granted only teaching certificates to a university that is classified as an emerging research institution.

One of the most significant changes took place in 2003, when the word "Southwest" was dropped from the name and "-San Marcos" was added.  (While some people were for the change and some against it, the fact is that the name change was discussed in the 1950s and in the 1970s - so this wasn't a radical new idea).  Signs around campus were changed from SWT to Texas State University-San Marcos.  Ten years later, the "-San Marcos" was dropped, leaving Texas State University to stand on its own.

Each name change is a story it itself, but we have the most examples of what the school looked like prior to the 2003 name change.
